Gum and Ink Cuttlefish
Sepia Apama (Giant Cuttlefish)
Sepia Apama (Giant Cuttlefish)
Process
All 4 of these pieces used  Gum Arabic with Acrylic ink and colored pencil on illustration board. The technique entailed layering Gum Arabic on pieces of the board that I wanted to remain lighter and painting over the entire composition with ink-- if you have ever seen someone decorate easter eggs or done so yourself-- this is the same concept. After that, you would add another layer of gum and another layer of ink (and so on). After rinsing the gum off with water to reveal the image underneath, I refined the image with colored pencil. The final result is what you see here.
