Gum and Ink Cuttlefish
Sepia Apama (Giant Cuttlefish)
Sepia Apama (Giant Cuttlefish)
Process
All 4 of these pieces used  Gum Arabic with Acrylic ink and colored pencil on illustration board. The technique entailed layering Gum Arabic on pieces of the board that you wanted to remain lighter and painting over the entire composition with ink-- think of it like how one would decorate an easter egg with crayon then dip it in dye-- same concept. After that, you would add another layer of gum and another layer of ink (and so on). After rinsing the gum off with water to reveal the image underneath, I refined the image with colored pencil. The final result is what you see here.
